I had removed the shops leaving the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">colonnaded</span> facade as an entrance to the site with railings between the bays. This was felt to be too incongruous with no architectural connection to the building. </div><br /><div>I have since tried to strengthen that connection by bringing some of the architectural language of the building to the parade. I have also tried to make the scheme interact more with its context by incorporating and developing the existing bus stop and adding a new cycle store.<br /><div></div></div>RYANhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07880546705579839689noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4446568786260563858.post-84161829508193426142009-04-16T13:48:00.000-07:002009-04-16T14:00:03.801-07:00ElevationsEast Elevation<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325394826997770386" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 196px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoHalrUM71rbjLoUkdibdiDC0I975GrAFwczSiWEQ443jBLXXwQZ7GvwMx9yRPmBM3lRWIWiw84YXn1cyMhadHKO-4kOoz80TQUDf4UZeX2_spls1QQch2ybO38NifRmsal9bfAhLNkes/s320/Elevation+E.jpg" border="0" /> South Elevation<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkmi52Hw9QFy7c04UMq-9ibioelGaNtOM-5mweEbNYeuXI3WVuxii32GYYVKh5UGVXkv1aZfibgWQSIWguWyDyioURD5nLQ_nYzH6hs961C4IAlykZzG9_tu9qcsRBKg2U4qQQE9m1ubA/s1600-h/Elevation+S.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325394830490300626" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 196px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkmi52Hw9QFy7c04UMq-9ibioelGaNtOM-5mweEbNYeuXI3WVuxii32GYYVKh5UGVXkv1aZfibgWQSIWguWyDyioURD5nLQ_nYzH6hs961C4IAlykZzG9_tu9qcsRBKg2U4qQQE9m1ubA/s320/Elevation+S.jpg" border="0" /></a> West Elevation<br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325394838368620322" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 196px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-MX41qZuJF68R4hUvgi3wrYSo2xdw0t-b67YBp2w4seZnVI-EegORVXCWK6BYRRF6gmR1UZ5iXomgTc2Nx3mFGKcgqOLlFxye005KVzlu94GgKmADe46wUCIx315fjhWXGG1F94OotuY/s320/Elevation+W.jpg" border="0" /> North Elevation<br /><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325395195334650498" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 196px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimK8D96IEaB6vcE2sVV0ym0EuiXojwF7RA8o4HXVe71I0uERahCRwg798VdvDrbKQag4Mt9caT5aoi4wdi_XelyR-2LhyphenhyphenCVZ-kzdP0nYxiScrLA2TtYTwWeCfE-KiRizKQnkDlCoVALP0/s320/Elevation+N.jpg" border="0" /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div>RYANhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07880546705579839689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4446568786260563858.post-89775714716952594202009-04-16T13:44:00.000-07:002009-04-16T13:47:32.645-07:00Final Design?<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha-SB9KBaBnqpg-DDy64Fmg2s2PZWCNTgppyoL9C5ypr0z-K_L_QAKRKMMcqyB3Pfd9pVc2x0ok7TDYJzQyiocRxZHXpbNVb00FI2UXVDYBpDiL9fx8VTGDbkh-sljOaM8D9E3ccmXLTk/s1600-h/test+1.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325393462044746690" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha-SB9KBaBnqpg-DDy64Fmg2s2PZWCNTgppyoL9C5ypr0z-K_L_QAKRKMMcqyB3Pfd9pVc2x0ok7TDYJzQyiocRxZHXpbNVb00FI2UXVDYBpDiL9fx8VTGDbkh-sljOaM8D9E3ccmXLTk/s320/test+1.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>A quick render of the scheme in context.</div>RYANhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07880546705579839689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4446568786260563858.post-78413778661865920012009-04-16T13:36:00.000-07:002009-04-16T13:43:41.726-07:00Volumes and Elevations<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcvELf8dMTZB4ZddqDriYHEG6ZG91QvrqRuBxgh-JE6ISymL_Sfky6DYagsGNXeETi7uNM7-IJbMXrL6R7TLuz8463KLQHXEvt4flyF4-_iAGq2p3MyU93vP3zr0Tpaw9jki9bXSaRXTo/s1600-h/Scan4_0003.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325392305356301698" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 279px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcvELf8dMTZB4ZddqDriYHEG6ZG91QvrqRuBxgh-JE6ISymL_Sfky6DYagsGNXeETi7uNM7-IJbMXrL6R7TLuz8463KLQHXEvt4flyF4-_iAGq2p3MyU93vP3zr0Tpaw9jki9bXSaRXTo/s320/Scan4_0003.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><br />Further amendments to the plans resulted in the addition of the second floor. Depending upon its position within the park the building took on differing relationships with the local and wider community. Siting the building to the front of the park on Chapeltown Road increased its relationship with the wider urban context whilst still retaining ties with the immediate community.<br />This advanced position also allows the scheme to make maximum use of the remaining parkland. It offers the potential to connect the building and its uses to the landscape and provide further facilities for the community.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div>RYANhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07880546705579839689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4446568786260563858.post-88496815499494184352009-04-16T13:21:00.001-07:002009-04-16T13:24:03.717-07:00Response to the Site<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpeCe_nrZjIEwgdZP6kx0NZYAHPafw0bYwkF-UKyuP4VpB3QcfStBHlhLWgaEKNFV5IVulgP6kGJ05rdeeflyAc9uudjCEAuoeaPM7tJBHV4Do7uWtzVfEFb-zSVAKiTC5KTqaZ9SVTOc/s1600-h/Scan2.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325387412623651634" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 318px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpeCe_nrZjIEwgdZP6kx0NZYAHPafw0bYwkF-UKyuP4VpB3QcfStBHlhLWgaEKNFV5IVulgP6kGJ05rdeeflyAc9uudjCEAuoeaPM7tJBHV4Do7uWtzVfEFb-zSVAKiTC5KTqaZ9SVTOc/s320/Scan2.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div><br />The sloping nature of the site raised a number of possibilities. Even with this additional accommodation the result could still be a relatively simple building.<br /><br />Due to the strong community aspect to the brief the importance of the landscaping throughput the scheme is elevated.<br /><br />The size and the deep rectangular shape of the site offer a number of potential options for the placement of the built form. The positioning of any buildings and their relationship with the landscape and context is vital to the success of the scheme.<br /><br />The example above shows the primary structure set back form the main road. The existing façade of Reginald Terrace is made more permeable so as to invite the user both visually and physically through to the communal gardens to the rear of the site. </div>RYANhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07880546705579839689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4446568786260563858.post-69022180425572462402009-02-08T06:28:00.000-08:002009-02-08T06:39:48.897-08:00Site Opportunities<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjknRPDOdwR749Fma3HPiZy96e6Ed0LTTjlimTvY06wH7eG32FUKv-JmmcZfliApSr8R5-tw9su7sep37P90oJY8bFVm63yYJmJN7MxOMVe-TkaHwrt6RzB6My5qbUbA2D0eIu3lf2g3s0/s1600-h/OPPS.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300433480960604482" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 229px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjknRPDOdwR749Fma3HPiZy96e6Ed0LTTjlimTvY06wH7eG32FUKv-JmmcZfliApSr8R5-tw9su7sep37P90oJY8bFVm63yYJmJN7MxOMVe-TkaHwrt6RzB6My5qbUbA2D0eIu3lf2g3s0/s320/OPPS.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />The large size of the site allows for the inclusion of varied activities that could be extended to the wider community. A strong local desire for quality public space could comfortably be incorporated into the scheme.<br /><br />Reginald Parade, the single storey shopping parade on the east boundary of the site, offers the opportunity for conversion into a main entrance gate.<br />The architectural language of the surrounding buildings, with the exception of the recently renovated shops across Chapeltown Road, is relatively bland. The challenge therefore is to create a building with a strong relationship to its context as the context is weak. Initial thoughts are that the design will be more influenced by the requirements of the brief. The trap to be avoided is designing an incongruous stand alone building with no real relationship to its surrounds.RYANhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07880546705579839689noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4446568786260563858.post-65076333799995355432009-02-08T06:26:00.000-08:002009-02-08T06:28:11.165-08:00Site Constraints<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3PMeciGGX-2lj2eP1D7Ojvd0ZFWdFkLoVxzR_WkyJe4riRya6aaqwx9hK5t1jwftfOnbgQioK1qLCPDZJsj-_05xT5MpgX3c3GabSZ75S27HGzqmTOAgxrzd3aed0yCdZ3c_u-bd7JUY/s1600-h/CONS.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300433164936715682" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 229px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3PMeciGGX-2lj2eP1D7Ojvd0ZFWdFkLoVxzR_WkyJe4riRya6aaqwx9hK5t1jwftfOnbgQioK1qLCPDZJsj-_05xT5MpgX3c3GabSZ75S27HGzqmTOAgxrzd3aed0yCdZ3c_u-bd7JUY/s320/CONS.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div></div><br /><div>The site has a slope of approximately 1 in 27 dropping 7.8m from west to east and 1 in 35 dropping 1.9m north to south.<br /><br />The residential properties along Reginald Street and Reginald Terrace currently have an uninterrupted view onto the park. Any development must ideally take this into consideration and not adversely effect the existing aspect.<br /><br />Reginald Parade sits rundown and largely vacant to the front of the site. This solid barrier currently obstructs views onto the site from Chapeltown Road.<br /><br />Chapeltown Road is a main route from North Leeds and the A61 into Leeds city centre.
